Disapointment (5 Comments)
We have whined calmly and with minimal exaggeration explained our harsh growing conditions here. We are continuing the saga here today as, with heavy hearts and down turned faces, we present the sad, sad story.
A gopher got this one. Yes, it’s Autumn and the leaves are supposed to be turning yellow but the other trees were still green and not dry and crunchy.
Another munched tree. This is was the Pie Cherry tree. It is close to the Peach tree that got the same treatment this spring. This was caused by deer. Hunting season is upon us but seems to have not effected our local deer population. Recently, Col. Panic saw three bucks- a fork, three point and a four point- with several does wander across the wheat field behind the house. The deer continue to use our yard as a buffet line- enjoying the various treats that we have so kindly planted and watered for them.
Here’s the advertisment being aired on the Gopher and Deer Entertainment Network right now: “All gophers and deer! Come dine on The Human’s Hard Work under the starry sky at this exclusive Fine Gopher and Deer Dining Establishment!”
The advertisment is working- they keep coming in droves.
I could have my father-in-law come do some hunting over there…maybe that would deter them. Sorry to hear you sad news. At least you can blame the critters…Ken and I usually kill everything through ignorance and neglect.

My parents just replaced three trees from deer and gophers. This summer they were blessed, I mean annoyed, with a beaver that wanted to spend the summer with them. He took out two trees and I do mean took them out. He chopped them down and drug them through a fence down to the creek. They were anything but impressed by his work. Even after hearing all these stories of critters and the inability to grow things I still wish I lived in the country! Ahhh…how sad huh.

I feel very sad when trees die. Have you joined Arbor Day Foundation? Ten free trees for your $10 membership. (Only sort of free, then, I guess.)

A hunter has to have a tag for this area to be able to hunt here and with the added complication of being a “special” area – there are extra permits to get I think- makes the hunting here more difficult.
I know why Lindsey didn’t see any bucks while hunting- they were all down here feasting in our yard.
At least we don’t have the “blessing” of beavers. I know some people not too far from here, close to the river, who have quite a bit of a problem with them. Not fun.
I can understand wanting to live in the country- even being overwhelmed and disappointed sometimes- we really enjoy it.
If we decide to plant more, we’ll look into the Arbor Day Foundation. Thanks for the reminder, KN!

I didn’t know you get 10 free trees. I might go sign my parents up for the Arbor Day Foundation. Thanks for the idea KN!
